Lagosians face flooding again

Residents of Lagos, on Wednesday, had a terrible time navigating water-logged roads, as heavy rainfall left most roads flooded.
The rain which started in the early hours of Wednesday flooded roads on the Island and the Mainland.





Most people who escaped the rain on their way to work came back to flooded streets after work.
Some of the roads were so flooded that vehicles could not pass through them, forcing the residents living in such areas to wade through the pool of water.




Residents of Aboru Road, Iyana Ipaja, lamented the fate befalling the axis of the metropolis.
A resident, Yemi Oluwasola told Daily Times that the experience is "scary judging from the havoc that flooding wrecked in the state last raining season."


"We just hope we are not into it again this year. Last year's experience is still very fresh in our memories," he said.

Residents have called on the Lagos State government to come to their rescue, to avert the impending danger of flood.

On Victoria Island, most of the adjoining roads were flooded and most pedestrians were forced to board motorcycles to escape the flood.

Lagos State, last year, had heavy downpour, resulting in floods which destroyed property and lives in some parts of the state.

The state is expected to experience more than 250 days of heavy downpour this year.

Exodus from Kaduna

Residents of Kaduna have started fleeing the state in droves for fear of more retaliatory attacks following the violence that has erupted between Christians and Muslims in parts of the state.

On Wednesday, panicked residents were seen being escorted out of the state by military personnel deployed to the area.

The heavy military presence on the streets has resulted in a semblance of calm.
Following last Sunday’s bombing of three churches in the state, reprisal attacks erupted against Muslims in parts of the state.

A 24-hour curfew was swiftly imposed in the state. However, when the curfew was relaxed on Tuesday, further violence sparked off, this time by Muslims attacking Christians in revenge.

 The state government has re-introduced the curfew.

An estimated 80 people have been killed so far in the violence, with over 140 injured.

Some residents who could not flee the state for various reasons took refuge in a compound in Kigo Road New Extension in Kaduna. Residents say they fear fresh violence will break out when the curfew is relaxed.

“How do you expect us to stay when it is very obvious that our lives and properties are not safe? After the 24-hour curfew now, who knows what is going to happen next? So the best thing is to run for our dear lives,” said a resident who did not want his name published.

The state’s police command says among those arrested so far, alleged to have been part of the marauding youths that attacked people, are illegal aliens from neighbouring countries such as Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Police kill three robbers in Lagos

Three members of a gang robbing bank customers in Lagos were shot dead on Wednesday by the police.

The incident occurred around 10:30a.m. at Anthony Village area of the state.

Following a distress call to the police, officers were mobilised from Onipanu and Pedro police stations to FINBANK and FCMB branches along Ikorodu Expressway.





 It was gathered that the gang members were robbing customers returning from the banks.

The police engaged the robbers in a shoot out, killing three and arresting two of them.

 The situation caused some apprehension in the area, as motorists and passersby had to scamper for safety.

The police arrested two of the suspects, while three others were feared dead.

Scientists discover new drug to treat deadly cancer

Scientists in Singapore have discovered a potential new treatment that may bring some hope for cancer patients with a highly aggressive form of lymphoma.

The compound involved is already being tested on a different illness – to treat rheumatoid arthritis, a local media reports.

It has been screened for safety, and so the trial process for the patients suffering from the cancer in question – NK/T-cell lymphoma – can be cut short.

“We are now planning to start clinical trials for patients,” Prof. Teh Bin Tean from the National Cancer Centre in Singapore said.



“In a best-case scenario, the drug could be available for treatment within five years,” he said.

Lymphoma is cancer that begins in the immune system. It is the fifth and sixth most common cancer in men and women respectively, with the NCCS seeing more than 300 cases a year.

NK/T-cell lymphoma, which is rare among Caucasians, is more prevalent in Asian populations.

Teh, who is director and principal investigator at the NCCS- Vari, Van Andel Research Institute, Translational Research Laboratory in the centre, hopes to start such a trial with around 25 patients in a year or two.

“I am hopeful that we might have found a molecular target for the treatment of at least some patients with this otherwise-fatal disease,” he added.

In 2010, a team of more than 20 local doctors and researchers with expertise in cancer, genomics, pathology and bioinformatics came together to study it.

They identified mutations in the Janus kinase 3 (JAK3) gene that seemed to have a major role in driving the cancer in a significant number of patients.

24 hour curfew imposed in Damaturu

The Yobe state government has imposed a 24 hour curfew in Damaturu, the state capital.

This followed the intense gun battle between the Joint task Force (JTF) and suspected members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect which occurred on Monday around 5:30 pm, running through the night.

A statement signed by the special adviser to the governor on Media and Information, Abdullahi Bego, directed residents to remain in their homes as the JTF and other security agencies continue their efforts in restoring peace in the state.

According to the statement, 24 hour curfew is only for Damaturu metropolis, as restriction of movement for other parts of the state still remains 10PM to 6AM while restriction of movement in Potiskum remains 6PM to 6AM daily.

The statement called on members of the public to give maximum cooperation to the JTF and other security agencies in their efforts to ensure the safety of life and property.

It also called on the people not to relent in their prayers for the restoration of peace in the state and the nation in general.

Report says that the gun battle between the JTF and the Gunmen lasted throughout the night.

My crocodile is my friend

Deep in the Costa Rican jungle, a fisherman named Chito discovered a crocodile that had been shot in the eye by a cattle farmer and left for dead.

 Chito was able to drag the massive reptile into his boat and brought him to his home, where he stayed by his side for months, nursing him back to health.He named the croc Pocho. “I stayed by Pocho’s side while he was ill, sleeping next to him at night…. I just wanted him to feel that somebody loved him, that not all humans are bad.” said Chito, ““It meant a lot of sacrifice. I had to be there every day. I love all animals – especially ones that have suffered.”




The day finally came when Pocho was strong enough to go back into the wild. Chito took him to a lake near his house and released him, but the animal simply got back out of the water and followed him home.

“Then I found out that when I called his name he would come over to me.” says Chito.

 

 The fisherman has been hesitant to tell his story, even though 20 years have passed since he first rescued Pocho.

 

Pocho is roughly 5.18 meters (17 feet) long. He and Chito play, wrestle and hug on a daily basis. That bond, Chito said, took years to forge.

“After a decade I started to work with him.”, says Chito casually, “At first it was slow, slow. I played with him a bit, slowly doing more.”

Chito has told his story now only to raise awareness of the cruelty that can be done to animals, and the difference that affection and treating other rightly can make.

“He’s my friend, I don’t want to treat him like a slave or exploit him.” said Chito, “I am happy because I rescued him and he is happy with me because he has everything he needs.”

Three police officers detained for helping Lawan

Three policemen consisting of a superintendent and corporals have been detained for allegedly allowing the suspended Chairman of the House of Representtaive Ad hoc Committee on fuel Subsidy Regime, Mr. Farouk Lawan to go home at night while in detention.

It was learnt on Monday that investigators suspected that Lawan did not spend Thursday and Friday nights in police custody.

He was allegedly taken to his Apo residence at night and returned to custody very early in the morning, in violation of custodial rules and regulations.

However, another source said the policemen merely allowed the lawmaker to go home to refresh and take his bath in the mornings of Friday and Saturday.

 

This came to the fore on Monday just as report says the Special Task Force investigating the $620,000 bribery allegation levelled against Lawan by Zenon Oil Chairman, Mr. Femi Otedola, ran into a brick wall on Monday.

It was learnt efforts of the team to retrieve the alleged $620,000 bribe were successful as the lawmaker failed to bring the money when he came to the Force Headquarters on Monday.

A member of the STF, who spoke with newsmen on the condition of anonymity, lamented that the police were also not getting the cooperation of the House leadership in their efforts to retrieve the money.

It was learnt that the Commissioner in charge of the Special Task Force, Ali Ahmadu, who discovered the security breach, reported the incident to the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.

The IG reportedly ordered the detention of the policemen.

A source said, “The three policemen are now in detention for flouting police rules on handling of suspects in detention and they are going to pay for it.

“But the officers are saying that they acted on an instruction from a superior officer, who has disowned them.”

It was learnt that the police authorities might employ a tougher stance against Lawan to force him to cough out the $620,000. The police high command is yet to determine the next line of action on the issue.

The member of the STF, who also spoke with journalists, said, “Lawan came and he did not bring any money. Even the leadership of the House, which we have contacted has not done anything.”

The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, said he was not aware of the development.

Robbers raid The Nation’s office, cart away N500,000

GUNMEN, Monday, stormed The Nation’s Newspapers office in Diobu area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, carting away over N500,000 and other valuables.



Bureau Chief of The Nation, Mr. Bisi Olaniyi, who confirmed the incident, said the robbers were two in number, adding that they were armed with pistols.

He said they went straight to the office of the paper’s Sales Representative, who was busy collecting sales from newspaper distributors.

He said the robbers, who came at 11am, collected all the cash with the Sales Representative and the newspaper distributors, who were on queue to make payment. He said the operation lasted close to an hour, adding that while the operation was on, the robbers ordered everybody in the office to lie face down.

According to him, the robbers left in a motor bike after the operation, adding that Police was later invited to commence investigation into robbery incident.

Some of the newspaper distributors, who commented on the incident, expressed gratitude to God that they were not shot. One of them said she never knew a robbery operation was on-going in the office when she came to make payment.

She said she met the door to the office locked, hence she had to bang on it consistently.

LASEMA evacuates residents living in weak structures

Residents of a Lagos structure adjudged as weak were thrown in commotion on Sunday, following their forced evacuation.

Officials of the State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said the exercise at House 3, Ajayi Road, Ogba, was carried out to prevent any casualty should the building collapse.

The team leader, who identified himself as Mr. Bosun, said the agency had received various reports about the poor state of the three-storey building.

Even though, the building residents only got notification to vacate the building premises on Saturday, everyone had complied by late Sunday evening.

A part of the building had sunk, and another tilted to one side.

The number of persons affected by the exercise could also not be ascertained, as at the time of writing this report because apart from residential apartments, the building also housed a church and a medical diagnostic centre, all of which have now moved.

But relocation has not been an easy option for those affected by the sudden evacuation exercise.
Amechi Ifedinezi, who was assisting a friend move his load, said it had been a long, tiring experience "for everyone involved."

"The residents have been splitting their goods and family members among friends, pending when they will get a permanent place," he said.

"Those with businesses here will also have it tough, as they might lose their customer base with the change of address. They will also lose money pending when they get a new office."

Defending the agency's action, Bosun said the evacuation exercise was imperative to "save the lives of the residents."

"We're here to ensure safety first; other decisions regarding the fate of the building and the relocation of residents will be decided by my superiors tomorrow (Monday)," he said.

However, the owner of the building, who declined to make any comment on the evacuation exercise, also attempted to dissuade journalists from covering the exercise.

The landlord said he was trying "to prevent any unnecessary publicity."

But according to another member of the agency, who did not want his name in prints, more evacuation exercises would still follow in the state.

"Over 100 buildings have already been marked to go on the Lagos Island alone," said the official.

Kaduna suicide bombings:Police take over the streets

 

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has ordered massive deployment of police personnel in Kaduna to restore calm following the bombing of three churches in the state on Sunday.

In a statement by the Force Deputy Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, the police boss appealed to residents of the affected areas to remain calm and avoid taking laws into their hands as the police and other security agencies were doing everything possible to end the incessant attacks.

Abubakar also urged opinion leaders to desist from making inciting or inflammatory statements capable of aggravating the situation. "Two wrong can never make a right," he said.

He warned criminal elements carrying out a campaign of violence against innocent citizens and institutions to desist from such acts.

 According to him, the police and other law enforcement agencies will not sit back and watch such people put the life of innocent citizens in jeopardy.

The heavy police deployment followed reports of breakdown of law and order in the affected areas as youths took to the street to protest the attack on the churches.

As part of efforts to restore normalcy in the state, Suleiman Fakai, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, who co-ordinates police operations in the North West, has moved to Kaduna, and would personally command police operations in the state.

According to the police, 16 people died in the attacks; nine, including the suicide bomber, died at Christ the King Catholic Church, three died at ECWA Church, and four at Shalom church.

Aircraft overshoots runway in Abuja

Another mishap was avoided over the weekend at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as a British Airways aircraft overshot the runway owing to an alleged failure of the airfield lighting on the runway.

However, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nnamdi Udoh, denied that the failure of the airfield lighting at the airport was responsible for the incident.

A British Airways Boeing 747 had arrived at the Abuja airport at 0515 on Saturday, but as the pilot was trying to taxi the aircraft to the apron, the airfield lighting on the runway packed up, which forced the pilot to overshoot the taxiway.

The aircraft was then forced to remain on the runway for close to an hour before the fault was rectified.
Udoh however, said that the incident occurred because of the closure of part of the taxiway owing to the ongoing repairs on the runway.

“British Airways landed safely. I told them that a lot of work is going on at Abuja airport. Some of the links were closed. It landed at 0400 hours and because it is a 747, it passed where it would turn right and then went towards one of the links that was closed and it needed to turn right there.

 The only thing for him (the pilot) to do there was to do what we call back track on the runway, but he preferred to turn right.

“He waited for a couple of minutes and the right link was opened and the man turned right. The era of airfield lighting failure at Abuja airport is over. It is verifiable,” Udoh said.

He added that the aircraft did not cause any delay on the runway.

PDP to host INEC auditors with N13m

THE National leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is set to spend N13,100,000 million in hosting auditors from Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The auditors, according to a memo from the National Auditor of the party, Chief Bode Mustapha, to the National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, are to audit the account of PDP party for the 2011 financial year.






Report says that the leadership of PDP has also approved the production of 772 portraits of Tukur and its National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

PDP’s National Director of Administration, Alhaji Gurama Bawa to Oyinlola, in a memo dated April 27 and entitled Approval for the production of official portraits of National Chairman and the National Secretary, stated the need for the auditing and portraits, following the election and assumption of duties by the newly-elected members of the National Working Committee of the party.

“It has been estimated that we need, for each of the two national officers, 386 portraits, thereby giving the total of 772 portraits.

The request has been approved by both Tukur and Oyinlola.

On the N13,100,000 estimate to host auditors from INEC, Mustapha demanded the amount in his internal memo dated May 14, to the National Chairman, entitled Hosting of INEC auditors for auditing of PDP account for the year ended 2011.

Mustapha said in the memo: “The National Chairman is to note that INEC will soon appoint an audit firm as external auditor for the purpose of auditing the account of Peoples Democratic Party.

“The audit unit of the party will host the INEC auditors during the duration of the audit exercise. Your Excellency is, therefore, invited to approve the sum of N13,100,000 for the purpose. Submitted for your approval, please.”

Former Chief of Staff’s objection
What caused the delay, as gathered, was that the sacked Chief of Staff to the National Chairman, Habu Fari, had requested that the memo be scrutinised before approval was given.

Fari, in his memo, replied thus: “You may kindly invite the National Auditor to shed more light on what he wants to expend N13,100,000 on.
“Let him explain the details for guidance and financial discipline, otherwise this request is outrageous for the purpose of hosting INEC auditors.”

Bicycles return to Jos roads

 Bicycles, usually very rare on Jos roads, have surfaced on major highways due to the recent ban on the use of commercial motorcycles in the city.

The bicycles, in different shapes and sizes, now compete for space along many highways in the metropolis as residents move about conveying relations and friends.

Before now the bicycles were only being used mostly by school children, farmers and junior level workers.

A visit to the Ahmadu Bello Way and Terminus in central Jos where the bicycles are being sold have also revealed a rise in their cost.

A used bicycle in the area which usually sold for between N9 and N10,000 has now risen to between N13,000 and N14,000, depending on the manufacturing company.

At Nasarawa Gwom and Katako however a new bicycle went for N13,000 as against the old price of N10,000.

Mr Jerry Gwani, a carpenter said he abandoned his bicycle three years ago when he bought a motorcycle.

``I stopped using my bicycle when I bought a motorcycle, but with the ban, I have returned to it since it is not banned.

``Usually it is the children that use it to run errands but I am back to it now,’’ he said.

A school girl, Anastasia Augustine, said that she had resorted to the bicycle because her father could no more convey her to school on his motor cycle.

``My father attempted to use it at the weekend but his motorcycle was almost seized. He told them he was not into commercial business but they said he would need to register and get a special permit,’’ she said.

The Plateau Government had banned the operations of commercial motorcyclists last week, two years after the first attempt resulted into riots in the city.

The Police Commissioner in the state, Emmanuel Ayeni, had on Friday in Jos told journalists that the ban was a total success and thanked members of the public for their cooperation.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Information, Yiljap Abraham, also described the ban as a huge success and said it was imposed to de-congest the roads and minimise threats to security.

Landslide renders 150 homeless in Anambra

A landslide which occurred in the Oko Community of Anambra has rendered more than 150 people homeless.

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Nwabufo Ijezie, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen.

He said that 15 buildings belonging to the affected people caved in as a result of the disaster, displacing and rendering them homeless. No life was lost in the disaster.

Ijezie, who described the magnitude of the landslide in the area as very high, said the state government, in conjunction with the Federal Government, would intervene to curtail its destructive effects.



The executive secretary explained that the state governor, Peter Obi, and some state and National Assembly lawmakers had visited the area to assess the extent of damage caused by the landslide.

Ijezie said that the visit would afford the legislators the opportunity to know the plight of the people and come up with legislation to address their helpless condition.

He added that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had been informed about the tragedy and efforts were being intensified to resettle the victims by building modest houses for them.

Building materials such as roofing sheets, planks, roofing nails, bedsheets and food items have already been purchased for distribution to the displaced people.

Ijezie announced that the landslide also affected Obosi, Nanka, Ozobulu and other communities of the state.
