Lagos students eye Guinness record in toothbrushing

Striving for a Guinness World Record in oral hygiene, officials in Lagos state, western Nigeria, have called on 300,000 students to take out their toothbrushes on December 5 and start scrubbing simultaneously at noon.

The current record was set in India on October 9, 2007, when 177,003 people gathered at 380 locations and brushed at the same time, according to guinnessworldrecords.com.

Nigeria wants to shatter that mark, organisers of the Lagos World Record Tootbrushing Challenge said.

“The idea is to promote and improve the attitude of Nigerians to good oral health habits,” said the project coordinator with Lagos state government, Bakare Lawal.

He further explained that “300,000 students, aged between 10 and 19, are to gather in multiple locations to participate in the competition at exactly 12 noon on December 5.” They will brush for one minute.

Three hundred schools have been asked to participate in Nigeria’s economic capital, one of the world’s largest cities with an estimated population of 15 million people.

The campaign was needed, Lawal said, because “poorly designed dental practices and lack of strong policies have combined to produce unpleasant but avoidable outcomes.”

Floss your teeth and reduce the risk of gingivitis............

Going health today, oral hygiene has become of utmost importance, especially after ma tooth extraction which was uneventful.

Do you know that brushing your teeth is important for oral health, but your toothbrush can't do it all.

You can scrub all the reachable surfaces of your teeth but some areas are impossible for a toothbrush to get at.

Food  also gets caught between your teeth  and  film of bacteria can harden becoming plaque if you don't remove it ,this plaque can become a hard mineral deposit called tartar.

Tartar on your teeth will only be eliminated by a dental professional. If tartar isn't dealt with it can make cleaning between your teeth hard to accomplish.

This can also result to the tissue of your gums can swelling  and bleeding especially while brushing or during mastication. This experience I can tell you can be unbearable as this  is the early phase of gum disease called gingivitis.

You can improve this picture between dental visits by flossing your teeth.

Pics:dentistry.com

Dental floss is made of either a bundle of thin nylon filaments or a plastic Teflon or polyethylene or a silk ribbon used to remove food and dental plaque from teeth.

The floss is gently inserted between the teeth and scraped along the teeth sides, especially close to the gums.

This removes interproximal dental plaque which is plaque that accumulates between your teeth.

Flossing can also polish the surfaces of your teeth, and reduce bad breath.
You should be sure to brush your teeth twice a day. Hopkinsmedicine.org recommends that you floss for two or three minutes, at least once a day.

You can floss before you brush, or floss afterwards. Don't use a segment of dental floss more than one time. It can fray and get stuck between your teeth. It can also put bacteria back in your mouth.

Take an 18 inch long piece of floss, wrapped around a finger on either hand, holding it between your thumbs and index fingers. Glide the floss back and forth between your teeth.

Curve the floss in the shape of a C when you get to the gumline, and slide it between your teeth. Hold the floss against the side of your tooth, and slide it up and down, away from your gum.

Pics:teethbleachingcentre.com

Give this treatment to each of your teeth, to the front and the back side of each one.
Most dental floss is made with plastic monofilaments or nylon filaments. Some types of dental floss are flavored, for instance with mint.

Dental floss comes in waxed and unwaxed, flavored and unflavored. It can be regular or wide, smooth or textured.

Waxed dental floss is the better choice if you have gotten unwaxed dental floss stuck between your teeth before. If you have trouble flossing you can use a number of different flossing tools such as a floss holder or prethreaded flosser.

Whichever type your prefer, they can all be effective. The most important factor is that you do it regularly and consistently to avoid chronic gum infection.

Have for yourselves a healthy September................

Okada riders sue LASG over traffic law

Commercial motorcyclists, popularly called okada riders, have sued to challenge the new Lagos State Road Traffic Law prohibiting them from riding on major highways in the state.

A suit filed on Monday, on behalf of the Incorporated Trustees of all Nigerians Autobike Commercial Owners and Workers Association (ANACOWA), asked the court to restrain the state government and “its agents, servants, officers, and or privies by whomsoever and howsoever from prohibiting the Claimants and members of their Associations from riding, driving and or propelling of a cart, wheel barrow, motorcycle or tricycle on the major highways in Lagos.”

Joined in the suit are the Attorney General of Lagos State and Lagos State House of Assembly.

ANACOWA’s counsel, Bamidele Aturu, also asked that the state government and its agents be stopped “from molesting, harassing, arresting, seizing their motorcycles or vehicles and in any other way subjecting them to any treatment, disadvantage or disfavour [sic] not suffered by any other road users.”

He argued that the highways where the motorcyclists are being prohibited in the traffic law are not state government roads. He, therefore, described the law as “ultra vires, illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional, null, void, oppressive, inoperative and of no effect whatsoever.”

Stressing his case, Aturu stated that the highways listed in Items 1-11, Schedule II of the law are federal trunk roads as stated in the Federal Highways Act of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
Such major highways listed in the law and being referenced by Aturu, include: the Lagos-Ibadan, Apapa-Oshodi, Lagos-Ikorodu, Lagos-Abeokuta, Lagos-Badagry, and Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressways.

Also, through an injunction, Aturu is seeking the release of all motorcycles belonging to ANACOWA, seized by the “defendants and their agents and/or officers.”

He also accused the state government of violating people’s right to engage in economic activities outside of the major sectors of the economy by the law’s prohibition of driving, propelling of cart, wheel barrow, motorcycle or tricycle on some routes in the state.

Woman divorced in Kaduna for giving birth to triplets

A woman, who gave birth to a set of triplets in Kaduna, has been divorced.

Reports  say  the woman identified as Zainab Sirajo at Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital in Kaduna yesterday where the babies are receiving medical treatment, reports that the triplets were delivered on May 4.

Narrating her ordeal, Zainab said she was issued a divorce letter by her husband, Kabiru Yusuf, only two days after she delivered the triplets, alleging that she was beaten by her husband for giving the birth before divorcing her, and since then she has been living with her parents.

The woman also said she had three children with her former husband, saying she is the only wife of Yusuf and that the triplets are her first delivery for him.

When she was asked the reason why she left her first husband, she said it was destined to be so. “I left my first husband due to the fortune of this set of triplets,” she said.

On how she feels about the triplets, she said “the only thing I will say is that God should bless them for me.

I am not planning to re-marry for now and even if I will, I will like to first of all take proper care of my children and give them good training with a sound education. Presently, I don’t have anything doing but if I get a job, I will do it just for the sake of my children”.

“Actually, I am not willing to go back to him even if he begs me to come back; this is due to his habit, which I am sure he will not change; he doesn’t take care of me nor his children even though he knew before delivery through the result of scanning that I was carrying triplets,” she said.

She however declined giving  her husband’s phone number and address but she only disclosed that he works at Panteka in Kaduna.

The matron in charge of paediatrics in Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital, Mrs Ajiyana Ramatu, confirmed that Zainab delivered a set of triplets four months ago which she said are two boys and a girl and that her husband divorced her two days after she was discharged from the hospital.

“After her delivery that time, I had to go round my colleagues for material and financial assistance that could be given to her; some gave a little cash while others brought some wears. So two days later when she was discharged from the hospital she was divorced for giving birth to triplets,” she said.

She said at present the hospital is planning to take the case to the state Social Welfare Department as the hospital could not continue to keep them.

Two policemen in public fight

Two police officers engaged in a fight on Monday at Bode Thomas Street in Lagos.

Trouble ensued when one of the men, who was in uniform, attempted to impound the motorcycle of his colleague in mufti, over improper registration and indiscriminate parking.

As a result, the officers made a spectacle of themselves in the full glare of publicity.

The officer in mufti had parked in front of the MTN office on the street to do some business inside the telecommunications office.

On returning to his vehicle, the officer in mufti was challenged by the uniformed officer, who wanted to arrest him for wrongful parking and not having a number plate on his motorcycle.

However, the officer in mufti felt insulted and the ensuing altercation soon resulted into fisticuffs.

Residents had to interfere by calling the District Police Officer (DPO) of Bode Thomas Police Station, when it became difficult to separate the duo.

On his arrival, the DPO requested for an explanation, but in the course of that, the uniformed police man slapped the other one across the face.

The DPO got angry and ordered the arrest of the two officers.

"I came from my office to settle this dispute and you still had the gut to slap him, we will have to go and settle this in the station," he said.

The police officers all left for the police station, while the residents kept voicing their comments.

One of the residents, Olawale Adegoke, who described Nigeria as a lawless country, said "that's why two police men can be fighting on the street, laying bad example for others."

"A normal citizen cannot do this kind of thing they have done. They didn't even regard the presence of their boss; it is unheard of," he added.

Ritualists kidnap girl; remove tongue, breasts, clitoris

Ritualists may have taken over Ogere, Ogun State, on Lagos-Sagamu expressway as a female victim on her way to Lagos from Port Harcourt was kidnapped and taken away at gun point for slaughter.

Her fresh corpse was later found close to the point where she was kidnapped two weeks later, with vital organs of her body, including tongue, breasts and clitoris missing and reports have it that this is the second of such incident occurring in the area in three weeks.

The victim, Miss Tonia Ibelefa, 25, was travelling in company of two male relations in a private car when the incident occurred.

Eyewitness account says that the armed ritualists blocked the expressway, dragged the University of Port Harcourt graduate out of the car and took her into the bush, adding that the two male family members with the girl surrendered her at gun point.

“She is the one we want and you must surrender her,” the ritualists told the two men, according to the witness.

The witness said the matter was immediately reported to the police in the area who launched a manhunt for the criminals to no avail.

Messages were also said to have been sent to the girl’s family in Port Harcourt who also reported the case to the police who immediately declared a case of missing person.

Thinking that it was a case of kidnap, the family waited to hear from the abductors but got no information about her whereabout.

However, the ritualists last Thursday called the parents through the number obtained from their victim’s phone, advising them to pick up the corpse of their daughter at a junction very close to where the incident happened.

Elder sister of the deceased confirmed that that family had since recovered the corpse, which still looked very fresh at the time of recovery, giving an indication that she was not killed immediately she was kidnapped.
