A two-storey building, located in front of the headquarters of Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, collapsed today with no death or injuries.
About 20 occupants escaped unhurt after they vacated the building when it started making cracking sounds before its collapse.
The house had been marked for demolition by the government as one of the buildings to pave way for road construction and expansion in the area.
Speaking with reporters at the scene, a 60-year-old occupant who sells local gin and herbs, Risikatu Madojutimi, said it was the crack sound that saved her and other occupants of the house.
“The crack sound was a saving grace for us (occupants). We immediately started moving out. It was not up to a minute that we moved out that the house collapsed with a loud sound,” Mrs. Madojutimi said.
Another occupant, who sells cooked food in a shop on the ground floor and lost today’s product, Amuda Olowonyo, said she was inside her make-shift shop with some customers before the building collapsed.
Ms. Olowonyo lamented the loss of her produce to the collapse, saying “as you can see the food trapped inside, it’s a great loss.”
The Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Lanre Edun, told reporters that the old age of the building, about 50- years-old, and heavy rains caused the collapse.
He said the local government quickly responded to the incident with the prompt invitation of the fire service and other rescue officials.
The council boss, who affirmed that no death was recorded during and after the collapse, said the council would bring down the whole structure.
