Abuja city gate makes way for multi decker bridges

The iconic Abuja city gate has being dismantled by engineers of construction giant, Julius Berger to make way for new multi decker bridges that will ease traffic on the ever busy airport road in the nation’s capital.

Traffic congestions along the major link roads in the FCT from the airport road, Kubwa and Maraba have caused delay for workers during peak periods on weekdays.

The city gate will now be erected at another location several meters away from the present location as the expansion of the airport highway to 10 lanes intensifies.

The gate which has been the symbol of the nation’s capital was erected in 1991 by the then military president, General Ibrahim Babangida.

The executive secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Adamu Ismaila, says the city gate was a temporary structure.

He explained that the gate has to be relocated to give way for the expanded road into the city.

Residents say they have come to identify with the city gate as a symbol of the territory but will be relieved to see the completion of the 10 lane airport road and the connecting bridges.

However some expressed concern about failed promises and the trend of uncompleted projects.
Already, a new city gate has been designed to be erected 20 kilometres from the current one, much closer to the airport.

It is expected to provide a dynamic entryway to the nation’s capital city, serving multiple functions and multiple facilities like hotels, amphitheatre, tunnels and recreational centres among others.
