Managing the closure of Third Mainland Bridge

The Lagos State Government says that 500 officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to man alternative routes during the period of the repair of the Third Mainland Bridge.

Kayode Opeifa, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, said that the LASTMA officers would channel and direct traffic in various alternative routes such as Ikorodu Road, Agege Motor Road, Ijora interchange, Oshodi interchange and Ojota interchange.

According to him, vehicles coming from Lagos Island to the mainland between 12 midnight and 12 noon would divert at Adeniji Adele to connect Carter Bridge at Iddo Junction and link Herbert Macaulay Way, Apapa or the Eko Bridge.

He said that the bridge would not be closed completely as partial use of it will be allowed during rush hours. However, he warned that traffic chaos should be expected in the first week of the partial closure of the bridge.

The bridge will be partially closed between July 1 and November 6; a development which many commuters have lamented is too long for repair works. Opeifa justified the duration the repair works on the bridge would last, saying that in some countries some repair works last for two years.

The commissioner appealed to commuters not to panic as the state government was ready to manage the traffic challenge that would arise as a result the rehabilitation exercise.
