Abuja residents protest demolition of houses

Residents of Kuchingoro, a suburb of Abuja have protested the demolition of illegal structures in the area.

The irate residents, some of who were armed with machetes, also threatened officials of the Federal Capital Development Agency (FCDA) and barricaded the link road from Area 1 to Galadimawa Junction.

Police officers who were initially deployed to the scene were repelled by the mob and had to regroup with soldiers before they could succeed in restoring normalcy.

One of the demonstrators, Tolu Adedeji, said that the residents were served notice last week but that the government failed to provide any alternatives.

Efforts to get a response from the FCDA officials were fruitless as they refused to speak with journalists at the scene.

Kuchingoro is among areas which have been marked for demolition by the FCDA.

Meanwhile, the FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, has said that his administration will strive keep to the Abuja master plan which has prompted the on-going demolition exercise.
