The Medical Guild, made up of doctors in the employ of the Lagos State government, has announced that its members will resume work on Wednesday.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday, the Medical Guild chairman, Olumuyiwa Odusote described the resumption as the right step following their recall.
"By 8am tomorrow, all our members will be at their duty posts," he said.
Odusote said that only a few doctors were yet to receive their letters of unconditional recall, and that they have been assured by the government that the omission was an administrative error.
It will be recalled that the state government recently recalled 788 striking doctors it earlier sacked for their failure to respond to queries issued to them.
However, the principal issue that led to their initial three-day warning strike is still hanging.
The doctors were pressing for the full implementation of an improved salary scale called CONMESS.
But Odusote expressed optimism that the state government would "keep to their word to resolve the issue within the next five weeks."
Reacting to their suit against the state government, Odusote said that court case would continue.
"We will go ahead with court case since the issue of CONMESS is still outstanding," he said.
He however added that the five-week ultimatum was given by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the doctors' parent body.
"So, suspending the strike action is a major shift because the recall has only taken us to status quo," he added.
Odusote also noted that the decision to call off the strike stemmed from their sympathy for patients, and their commitment to the medical profession.
He said, "We want Nigeria to reduce maternal and child mortality and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015; this cannot be achieved if doctors are on strike."
