Motorists groan as flood take over Oshodi/Apapa expressway in Lagos

THE ever-busy Oshodi-Apapa Expressway was, yesterday, shut down and road users trapped for several hours following an afternoon down pour that flooded First Rainbow and Mile 2 Bus Stop areas of the road.

The flood caused a gridlock that stretched beyond Ijesha Bus Stop forcing commuters to trek long distances.

The afternoon rain caught many road users unawares as the only alternative road from Lord Chosen Charismatic Church through the Omuwo Odofin Industrial estate, also witnessed heavy traffic.

Motorcycle operators popularly known as Okada, took advantage to make brisk business and charged hapless commuters outrageous fares.

The Oshodi-Apapa Expressway has become nightmarish for road users with its accompanying incessant gridlocks particularly when it rains and it appeared to have defied every redemptive approach.

The major dual carriageway has continued to inflict untold hardship on motorists and caused unimaginable economic loss to individuals, organisations and governments.

Yesterday’s rain was the second major rainfall in Lagos this year and the flooding it caused has shown that all palliative efforts of the Federal and Lagos state governments to prevent flooding on the expressway, according to Mr. Moses Ogunleye, a town planner, have not been effective.

The former chairman, Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, NITP, said: “What the drainage channels require is a holistic approach that involves the realignment of the drainage system, as some portions may have failed completely.”

He added that, “any approach that does not talk about redesigning the drainage channels will amount to wasteful venture.”
