Army officers, barrack residents seize Policemen in Lagos

Trouble erupted at the Myhoung barracks in Yaba area of Lagos between military officers, residents of the barrack and members of the Nigerian Police attached to the Sabo/Yaba Police Division when arresting police officers chased down a commercial bus driver into the barracks.

The Policemen, numbering five, were said to have chased down the commercial bus driver for violating traffic laws but attempts to stop him proved abortive and a car-chase ensued prompting the bus driver to head towards the barrack where it was alleged, the bus owner resided, so as to escape being apprehended.

He was however wrong to think the policemen would give up following his entry as they continued their chase and were able to successfully apprehend him, before an angry mob trooped out to demand the way and manner in which the officers entered their barrack.

“All we started hearing was one chance, one chance, one chance and we didn’t even know they were policemen but we had to pursue them before finally catching them here with this man (suspect)”an eye witness, Sule Ali told Newsmen.

"When those officers got here, the first thing the man was saying was that he wanted to deliver the car to his oga (boss) but the police didn’t hear and started beating him saying they have been pursuing him from Ikorodu Road, it was during that time that people turned out and said the police have no right to take him away", another witness further alleged.

When contacted, a stationed Military Police officer at the Myhoung Barracks who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed mob’s involvement in the arrest, saying the police officers breached protocols and should not have entered the barracks in the first place the way they did.

"The Police shouldn't have come here, this is a military barracks and those policemen shouldn’t have driven in the way they did. We have tightened security due to the high rate of attacks on military barracks throughout the country and entering a military barrack in such manner could be mistaken for an attack."

"There are procedures to be followed when you want to arrest a running suspect but they breached that procedure and we were alerted by the security officers stationed at gate duty post about the chase, which was why we decided to arrest the policemen and the bus driver" he added.

When asked if army residents participated in the attack on the officers, he said "We are not sure at this moment, but any civilian or army officer that has taken the law into his hand to attack officers of the law will be punished, we have taken in some of those people too for questioning as well"

He however refused to comment on the whereabouts of the arrested police officers but said the matter is being investigated and will be handled to the appropriate quarters.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer of the Sabo Division said he was yet to be briefed on the matter but his deputy has been sent to investigate the matter.
