Abuja residents have decried the poor state of the Jabi Lake and Park, located between Jabi and Kado Districts.
The park offers relaxation facilities for residents. However, the facility is in a poor state as weed and litter have taken over parts of it.
Abdullateef Olajide, a musician who resides in Suleja, Niger State, said that he and his group use the park for their rehearsals because of its serene atmosphere. "We have enough space to do all our rehearsals without disturbing anybody; even the cool breeze and fresh air is inspirational; but the place could be better, if well managed,’’ he said.
Ikechukwu Iyeke, a businessman, said that he visits the park at least twice a month for exercises; and urged city authorities to maintain the facility so that it would continue to serve the purpose for which it was created.
Another resident, Olatoyinbo Hosea, who brought his children to the resort for a birthday party of a colleague’s child, expressed concern over the possibility of snakes and scorpions hiding under the overgrown weeds.
Ndubuisi Okoye, a civil engineer who also visits the park on weekends, said he was uncomfortable with the state of security in the park. "The gates have been vandalised; nobody mans the gate, people come and go the way they like without any query," he said.
"The lighting facilities have all been stolen; you cannot come here at night because you will be robbed.
Jabi Park can be as good as any park in the world.
The concept is laudable; but as is usually the case of anything in Nigeria, the vision is not sustained."
